I actually mostly agree with you, especially in the context of Mastodon. Medium sized instances blocking other medium sized instances make the fediverse a more diverse place and make what server you’re on a meaningful choice. But this is more like mastodon.social blocking kolektiva.social in terms of dynamics. The instance sizes make it not as healthy.

I kind of like Cloudnine’s ergoeomic keyboards. They’re fairly inexpensive for a split mechanical keyboard, but I like most things about them. There’s a full size (huge) and a TKL (merely large).

The configuration software is Windows-only, and also not very good, but you don’t have to use it for anything.

I do agree that digrams/trigrams turn out to be the most important thing in this kind of layout. The MessagEase layout seems to get a lot of digrams right, even if it’s only by accident. I think the real problem is that we don’t have a very good model for the relative costs of things like non-alternating thumbs and sliding from the same box after a tap. I think the optimization algorithm would probably not be that hard relative to quantifying the costs of different placements.
