On the other hand the amount of information that will be lost forever will be staggering if they do stay permanently private, there is almost two decades worth of stuff, a lot of it posted directly to reddit that doesn’t exist anywhere else.

Majority of them hired last year, back in 2021 they only had 700. The only reasonable explanation would have been adding hundreds of new admins/moderators, but I don’t think that was the case, so I have no clue what all of them have been doing for the last year and a half.

I’m more worried what will happen when instances start going down permanently. The decentralization makes sure the whole concept can’t collapse all at once, but unless some sort of migration/linking is implemented in the future this isn’t that far off from the old times with random bulletin boards and personal forums that you might just find gone one day, all content and accounts permanently lost to the sands of time.

There is still the end of the month API deadline, Reddit is expecting everyone to return and forget the whole thing, which could work like the other “blowups” if the issue actually was over by then, but it isn’t. If and when the 3rd party apps go dark it’s going to kick off another wave of protest, and this time it’s not going to end until 3rd party apps are available again. What is left to be seen is how many users, moderators and subs are actually willing to participate, and how many just throw in the towel and give up.

Plenty of them will do that simply because they are currently using 3rd party apps, bots and other tools to moderate and won’t be able to do it nearly as efficiently afterwards. The people at Reddit seem to have very weird idea of the value of their userbase, where they just look at the huge lurker mass and somehow completely ignore that without mods and content creators, there isn’t anything for them to consume.

I guess it depends on a “ship of Theseus” type of a thing. Sure, I’m technically using a 2018 first gen Ender 3, but it also has linear rails, a Phaetus Dragonfly with a Bondtech CHT nozzle and BMG extruder, a BLtouch and it’s running Klipper with input shaping, and as a result it can spit out an almost flawless not-a-speedbenchy (because I have a 0.6mm nozzle running 0.3mm layers so it doesn’t qualify) in 22 minutes. Only thing missing is that I still haven’t upgraded the main board or stepper drivers as I’m not bothered by the noise.

So it’s both 5 years old, and also better and more moderd than quite a few of the models provided by Creality today.

Something like the user tags on Steam games could work well: give the users the ability to submit and vote on tags, give the moderators/admins the ability to remove and blacklist ones they don’t like, and let the community sort everything as they see fit. Searching and displaying them could then be "show me everything with the tags “cute AND (cats OR dogs)”

This is pretty neat. I personally modified it to display the Finnish flag emoji as my home instance is for the most part meant for Finns :)

Defederation is unintuitive and seriously distributive - there now exists multiple versions of this post with different set of comments and votes depending on who is looking from where. My comments from sopuli.xyz to this post on sh.itjust.works are being send to pawb.social as sopuli and pawb are federated (or because pawb hasn’t defederated on their side?) , but anything happening on pawb.social is not being updated to sh.itjust.works.
