This is terrible in every way. These online resources are incredibly important for teenagers who feel isolated, and it could even cut off adults’ access to these resources because people might have to hand over their ID to get access to mental health content, which e.g. people with drug addictions might not want to do for various reasons.

well, I guess it depends it depends if you are allowed to link libraries, if not then good luck implementing TLS etc. from scratch :) The modern web really isn’t that simple anymore…

Reminds me of this cool website where you can see all the complexity involved

Hah, I edited the same thing into my comment earlier :)

edit: also that “unreviewed content” popup is such a scourge. it seems to pop up completely randomly, just to force you to use the app. glad to be off that platform.

It doesn’t seem like the main developer has said anything yet, though, that’s why I didn’t include it in my list. But hey, it’s open source, so I’m sure someone will contribute a pull request if it doesn’t happen officially!

I don’t know either. I’ll agree with you though that not restricting AI so that only big tech companies who have lots of lawyers can research it (and not release it) is the worst case scenario. And I fear that it’s either that or complete dysregulation. OpenAI etc. just have too much money for lobbying, and given this is all happening in the US, which seems to be quite susceptible to monetary influence in politics, so I doubt any laws are gonna be passed to restrict them. Besides, there’s the national interest in not letting China take the lead.

I’m certainly aware of these issues, and wrestle with them regularly, as I still host email myself. That said, my professional stuff is also going through Outlook (my worst enemy as a self hoster, but I can’t really switch right now).

Still, I see it as a positive that with enough resources/time, you can still get into this space, evidenced by all the smaller email providers which still pop up and seem to have pretty good deliverability. It’s just still the best we’ve got. We won’t widely agree on anything better anytime soon, even in more technical circles.

I’ve had great fun working through Crafting Interpreters (in Haskell and Zig, which were both new to me), and discovering a lot of new music (sophie, underscores, xiu xiu, and more). Other than that, life’s been rough, but I’m lucky to have quite a bit of free time recently at least.
