Handing over credentials to a potential bad actor is absolutely a valid concern… unless you didn’t verify email and have no interest in using the account again.
In that case it becomes an effective means of protest. ;)
The lack of indexing and privacy status of the subs likely contributes - but it’s also API rate limiting for many of the automated tools like Power Delete Suite.
It will appear that your comments are gone, but the limiter prevents activity from being permanently written over X calls per minute.
j0be, the dev for PDS, was informed about the rate limit issue ~2 years ago. I think they recently updated the script to open the discussion page on reddit about it, but there is no limit logic currently.
My personal experience is that using PDS requires multiple attempts - however, the tool is working until it surpasses the call limit.
Seems like an arbitrary “trolls gonna troll” sort of thing that really shouldn’t have a high priority.
That being said - I’m not a fan of the moniker anyway. We can do better.
Here’s two off the top of my head based on reddit. Both aren’t my favorite, but variety is the spice of life!
- Federedditors
- Reddfugees
Weirder still - they won’t let you control your own speech due to poor data and systems architecture (at best).
The way their API and database is set up only indexes a portion of your comments, and forbids you from accessing them if another “authority” cuts you off (private subs) - which leaves your ability to delete, modify, or otherwise manage what you have input into the site.
The world through spez’s dead eyes:
Spez is the King, appointed by God (the board). The mods are landed gentry, who rule small fiefdoms (subreddits) at the pleasure of the King. The King doesn’t pay them, but as long as they don’t upset the King they’re allowed to abuse the commoners (arbitrary bans, etc) and extract profit from them (sell out to companies that want control over the moderation of subreddits.)
wonder how he’d feel if some rich fucks decided to destroy his hobbies
To be fair, the jailbait sub is long gone.
There was a pretty nasty article on Reuters which I would consider a nail in the IPO’s coffin.
Emphasis mine:
Thousands of moderators overseeing the site’s so-called subreddits are on strike. It’s a wrinkle in Reddit’s plan to go public, and a sign that plan is premature.
When Reuters says that, it means that everyone else knows their schedule to IPO (at minimum) is dead in the water unless they want to have the most laughable initial offering in history.
Long-term, their ability to recover from this seems mostly dependent upon the power users who moderate, and generate meaningful content’s willingness to stick around.
Those who remain indifferent are unlikely to fall within the group specified above.
Discord has threaded discussions, but its truly a case of “jack of all trades”. It’s simply not built to manage they kind of content, and does nothing but realtime comms with any utility.
Guilded is better, but still relatively unpolished.
The only real apples:apples option for an exodus from snooville is a vbulletin site or federated boards like kbin.
My read was that BlackCat only got non-prod data. So perhaps it’s sourcecode.
In which case… they’ve likely got nothing of value other than the code used to track users.
