some of them are just obscure and i only heard of their artists and that they were a big thing (big enough to be suppressed and harassed) from this book “The Folk Singers and the Bureau” and others arent quite labor/communist songs but i just think are neat like “The Dying Cowboy” and “Farewell Angelina” theyre absolute heart-renders. some are only on there because theyre a bit different but i wouldnt call them good and they only barely fit the style like “Coal Miner’s Daughter” by far my least fav

every iteration of the struggle that builds on past theory to keep a socialist project alive is such an incredible gift. exactly as you said it - i don’t see how Trots can stay Trots when theyre actually being intellectually rigorous and not doing some anti-Soviet hero worship revisionist type thing

in terms of pure theory and knowledge Rev Left and the extended Breht Cinematic Universe (Guerilla History, Red Menace) is the best of them. the rest just are like “gee shucks look at this event heres some leftist commentary” meanwhile f you go into Rev Left you will come out with so much communism you will be seeing blue and green because the red particles in your eyes have condensed into your heart
