I used to work for Akamai for quite a while, so I’ve got a lot of experience in the CDN sphere. Let me know if you’d like guidance or assistance in coming up with cheaper solutions for handling the heavy lifting of your CDN needs, especially for highly-cachable content.

I’ve been blocking individual communities as they pop up in my feeds.

I wish there were an easier method for this (like via the vertical “…” kebab menu) without having to click into the community directly.

I’d be suspicious of drawing those kinds of subtle lines in the sand. Malicious groups savor those kinds of guidelines so they can dance around them and test their firmness.

The spirit of their dialogue is designed to be disarming, giving them a foothold in this community. Their chosen behaviors and methods of influence are not what I want to see in a virtuous fediverse.

Maybe this is because I have a guarded heart after being burned a lot, but if you’re giving someone “one more chance”, that’s a good sign you’ve given them too many chances already.

I was listening to a podcast the other day ( https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510282/pop-culture-happy-hour ) and learned about a new phrase: “rep sweats”.

When you have a person who is aligned with a specific minority group encountering a piece of media or interest or subculture that provides positive representation of their specific minority group, that there is an inherent pesky need to WANT to like that specific thing EVEN IF it’s not very good.

I feel like that’s exactly what’s happening here with Hexbear. They’re self-admitted trolls. But they’re friendly to trans people… so we’re having rep-sweats about aligning with them.

It’s supposedly a sign that your minitory group has truly taken hold in society when one can confidently look at a piece of, say, trans-aligned media and say “Yeah, it’s got trans representation in it… but it’s not good and I don’t like it.”

What makes you think I haven’t? I mentioned learning something new, and provided a citation.

Note the logo on the status window there: TrustArc.

A little searching for that company shows that this dark pattern is effectively a feature of their service. Twitter user “pixelscript” dug into their javascript a bit to find the cause of the delay. It turns out that, as you may have guessed, this isn’t any kind of asynchronous callback pause waiting on the remote server to do something. It’s just a self-imposed client side delay; because they feel like making you wait.

Moral of the story: do not patronize businesses with hostile relationships with their customers.

Pretty much everyone in this thread needs to go read Ryan North’s book “How to Invent Everything: A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler”.

Or, if you don’t have time, just print this out and keep it with you at all times:

The Sound Transit Board also blew off the concerns of Seattle Subway and Transit Equity For All when they decided to torch $170M in funds (and 2 whole years) to study precisely how terrible an idea it will be to eliminate useful stations in place of putting a transit stop on the doorstep of the city jail and a BMW dealership instead of in the middle of the CID. And also rob midtown (First Hill) of their connecting station.

Should I just be like surprise me and provide a rough understanding of what I want.

I would advise not doing that.

Start poking around on Pinterest or some other sites. Find a photo of what you want, show it to them and ask “can you make it look like this?”

Photo references are 100x better than verbal descriptions. And it’s wise to not say “surprise me” to a stylist you don’t know very very well.
