I just finished the much needed server upgrade! So far, it seems to be running much faster, but let’s see how it goes (if you notice any issues at all, please let me know). Just wanted to say thanks to those who stuck around.
Additionally, we have a new matrix room, where you can receive real time updates on kbin.earth announcements, ask for support, or just generally chat: #kbin.earth:matrix.org.
Finally, I’m looking for people who want to volunteer as admins (global mods). There’s not much to do at the moment, but I think it would be good to have some backup in case I’m ever unavailable. Basically, just making sure everything on here is following the rules outlined on the About page.
I hear you. I hope you are feeling relieved now.
So how do the slow downs come about? I only experienced slow downs recently about two weeks ago, then improved s bit and then the last 2 or 3 days went back being slower. Kbin.earth never was super fast for me, but comfortable speeds. Very comfortable now.
I have no idea what’s causing it. Most likely just higher traffic; more traffic means more workload on PHP and the database, which when the CPU capacity is exceeded, means slowdowns. I did notice recently it’s gotten about 22 million requests in the past month, which for only 130 users, seems really high. It’s possible we’re being targeted by bots, but I don’t know.
And, I’m honestly not sure I’m relieved. The database itself still seems to be jumping past 100% CPU usage every once in a while (I’ve seen it above 300%). Let’s just see how it goes in a few days, but it’s possible I’ll have to upgrade once again (if not now, maybe in a month), which, of course, means even higher costs.
If money weren’t an issue, I’d just rent a powerful dedicated server and call it a day, never to have to worry about it.
