“fuck u/spez” means absolutely nothing to anyone who isn’t familiar with Reddit, it’s just noise.
“FIRE STEVE HUFFMAN” is a clear, actionable statement that has a clear target and goal and actually has meaning to people who don’t know what Reddit is (like say, a potential shareholder or investor)
Idk where to put this since r/savethirdpartyapps got banned so post this wherever will get noise if you agree
To illustrate how I view your point, I wrote this analogy:
You lobby the government to fund welfare programs for the poor.
I pray for the complete end of poverty.
(And personally do 1 and ½ hours of church charity work each month.)
(We invite troubled teens to church where we serve pizza, put on a movie, and give out free Bibles at the end.)
(I swear this method is going to work eventually. Our work is definitely going to lead to the end of poverty. Have faith.)We are not the same.
Reddit isn’t about to fucking die, no matter what you want. Just like poverty isn’t about to end, no matter how hard you pray.
You not using Reddit is insignificant in terms of trying to achieve that goal. The entirely of the Fediverse completely leaving Reddit is more significant, but still nowhere near enough.
We’re a minority that was willing to switch. Arguably we may be a significant minority with the ability to make this place a successful long-term alternative, but we’re not enough for our loss to be a killing blow, even with a doctrine of complete disengagement from Reddit where even criticism and calls for change are successfully discouraged.
You wanting the more crushing blow doesn’t make you a more effective part of the effort to direct the flow of fate’s river to favor us.
You wanting more of an impact doesn’t make more of an impact.
For some actual impact, lobbying for Steve “Spez” Huffman’s resignation by creating a hugely popular, highly visible and well-targeted backlash may be more effective than complete disengagement, where we would effectively be making ourselves neutral in this media conflict.
I’m not completely certain he can be made to really feel the consequences of his infamy, but I do trust my own judgment on this more than I trust yours. I don’t believe complete disengagement is useful right now at all. We have a torrent of angry crowds we could be riding.
