A lot of racists in the US are spineless, chickenshit cowards. They don’t think of themselves as racist, only that they have “justifiably” racists opinions. This means they know not to say certain things, especially in the presence of non-whites. Of course, they will shout slurs if they feel they can get away with it or if they think they’re surrounded by enough of their fellow racists.
Racists in the US tend to do things that are the equivalent of “I’m not touching you” while their finger is inches away from your face. They will stalk non-whites/call the police, get confrontational by saying “What are you doing here?” and so on. It’s obviously racist behavior, but hidden behind dog whistles.
