Venezuelan security forces have surrounded the Argentine embassy in the capital Caracas, which is sheltering six Venezuelan political figures opposed to President Nicolás Maduro.

Members of the Venezuelan opposition posted images and videos of officers from the country’s intelligence service forming a perimeter around the embassy complex. Opposition figures inside the building said they were under “siege” by Mr Maduro’s regime.

The embassy, as well as Argentine interests in Venezuela, have been represented by Brazil since diplomatic relations between Argentina and Venezuela broke down over the summer due to the outcome of Venezuela’s presidential election.

On Saturday, the Venezuelan government revoked Brazil’s custody of the embassy, it said, in an apparent attempt to remove its diplomatic protection.

This one seems more cut and dry that other global issues. Madurai has been ruling Venezuela for a long time. An election was held where he wouldn’t let leaders stand against him in the election and had anyone viewed as possibly winning arrested. He did allow the one person to run who he felt wasn’t a threat. That person ended up winning the election but Maduro won’t recognize that he lost and won’t release any proof that he won. The person that won has released proof that he won. Now Maduro says that anyone doubting his narrative is a terrorist. Obviously Russia and China are siding with Maduro as they don’t much like elections either but the rest of the world is pretty unhappy about this development along with the majority of the Venezuelan population. Current supports and members of the party that won are apparently in the embassy that Maduro appears to be surrounding.

I think it is important to remember, that the US tried to stage a Coup in Venezuela in 2020. And given the many Coups of the US in South- and Central-America, it is natural for the opponents of the US to also oppose any US backed politician in the region, irrespective of who actually won the elections. This does not excuse Maduro, but the US directly meddling in South-America and Central-America is alive and well as it ever was.

You’re not wrong, but I also think it’s important to point out that just because the US interfered in 2020 doesn’t mean it interfered in 2024. In fact, I can think of a reason or two – like, say, Biden being in office instead of Trump – why its policy on attempting coups might be vastly different.

Venezuela’s current leaders are denying the results of a landslide election which they lost, despite massive interference with the opposition’s campaign. The leaders of Venezuela are now trying to arrest all the opposition figures they can and has promised to send them to prison camps.

Maduro et co, the ones in charge of Venezuela, are fascists pretending to be socialists.

Daily reminder that authoritarianism and socialism are logically, theoretically, and obviously incompatible. That’s why tankies sound so incoherent.

Tankies: “We need to distribute the essential levers of power (economic) amongst the workers!”

Sane Leftists: “Excellent! How are we going to do that in this particular case, now that we’ve gained control of the country?”

Tankies: “Putting all economic authority into the hands of state-appointed bureaucrats in a non-representative government that operates purely according to the desires of a small party clique in which the workers have no say, and jailing workers who disagree. Oh, and you.”

Probably the guy trying to arrest his political opponents just for existing. I don’t know enough details about the election to say anything about that, but arresting political candidates for political reasons makes you a bad guy.

Pretty much everybody’s the bad guy here, tbh. Sort of a Lybia-during-Gaddafi situation - he was horrible, but it’s not like they’ve been in a great place since.

Bullshit. He lost, and like most shitty authoritarians like Putin and Xi, he’s refusing the will of the people like the piss baby he is.

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
