Should carbon mtb frames be protected with a film? Or do you all ride bare carbon?

It’s a good idea to protect any frame. Random rock with a sharp edge can puncture anything in the right circumstances.

Yes. Some modern steel frames have super thin 0.8mm sections which can be punctured without much force. No one wants to ride a 10kg frame.
