I found out about it because of a hacker news comment discussing the Reddit drama. I’m pretty upset that I didn’t discover it on Reddit. I assume any mention of Lemmy was marked as spam or was I just not browsing the right communities?

It feels like a lot of people new to the fediverse think it revolves around lemmy. It always feels a bit divisive to come across posts like this that single out lemmy. It would be nice if people asked about the fediverse or threadiverse or something. Don’t forget that us kbin users (among others) are browsing the same threads and partaking in the same discussions.

To be fair, I thought kbin was simply a Lemmy frontend at first

Ultimately, they’re both ActivityPub clients. Kinda. Maybe client is the wrong term.

I thought everything revolved around Mastodon.

Waiting for the day when YouTube annoy lots of users and the same discussion happens about Peertube.

I dont think that day will ever come. Hosting text is one thing, hosting 4k video is something else entirely. Kbin and lemmy have both had server problems and neither host lots of video like YouTube does. Its questionable weather YouTube is even profitable.

It will be different, for sure, but big YouTube personalities who make most of their money from brand deals already could actually see themselves come out ahead in the fictitious world where everyone leaves Twitter and Reddit for the Fediverse.

Hosting videos is expensive, but the big names make more money for YouTube than covers said names’ usage costs, and if people ever had reason to realize that they can follow PeerTube from Lemmy/kbin/Mastodon/Calckey/etc., then Bob’s your uncle.

Of course, we don’t live in that world. But it’s a nice thought.

The tech is incredible, posts are shared seamlessly and replies are almost instant! The threadiverse is going to have so many cool apps in the future.
