Why is there an option to link a Matrix account in the settings?

I’m obviously new. The settings are quite self‐explanatory, but I couldn’t find info on the Matrix input field. What is its purpose?

I just added mine to my profile but I don’t think the encrypted message option has appeared yet. Not sure if it takes time once added.

When I visit your profile, I can see “Send Secure Message” (which links to matrix) right next to regular “Send Message”. So it’s probably working.
