Though right now, I must admit I still haven’t wrapped my head around the federates concepts.

The easiest way to explain it is there’s a bunch of websites all using the same api, you can see all the communities from all the websites with any of the websites, and you can subscribe to the ones you want. This one is hosted at lemmy.world but you could read and subscribe to it over at lemmy.ml if you wanted to.
If you want world news you can subscribe to any communities from the federation. Or all of them.
