Mars is named for a god of war because it is red. Red is associated with war because blood is red. Mars is red because of iron oxide on the surface. Blood is red because hemoglobin contains iron that oxidizes when it’s exposed to air.

@TwoMindsQ I think it’s just the top layers, but I’m no Mars scientist.
