You can’t criticize a game and enjoy it?
If Starfield (re)taught me anything it’s that some people will take the slightest reservation about their Best Game Ever as a mortal insult. So… they certainly can’t.
I think the other side of that coin is that, for a lot of intellectual property, there are definitely people who want everyone to stop enjoying it. So you’ve got a bunch of loud mouth idiots who don’t understand constructive criticism or criticism from a place of love. Then you have a bunch of other loud mouth idiots who believe that if something isn’t exactly what they think it should be then it should be burnt to the ground so that it can get remade by someone else.
So reasonable people who are having a good time but still have some reservations are drowned out in the larger conversation.
I have the same issues with the updates that the QUIT HAVING FUN stick figure does. I also have fun when I play the silly block game.
I’m inclined to believe most people on a forum for a game enjoy it, and spend time criticizing it because they honestly want it to be better. There’s things in life I don’t enjoy and I could tell you why I didn’t like them, but I certainly didn’t talk about these experiences on forums dedicated to the things I didn’t enjoy.
Seeing negativity all the time can be pretty exhausting. I also think it’s easier to talk about the negatives of something. I don’t really have any guesses for why I enjoy Minecraft or why I like the programmer art, I just know I like these things. But I can tell you about things I don’t like and guess at why, and I can also recommend fixes for problems. I can’t recommend fixes for things that aren’t problems, for things that I already like just as they are. (Although I think everyone else covered why they take issue with the same things the QUIT HAVING FUN stick figure complained about well enough that I’m not going to reiterate their points.) And this is a discussion forum, people are going to talk about what’s easier to talk about and what they have more to say about. So that’s probably why you see a lot of complaining on an enthusiast forum.
