Greetings World News! A couple of us mods from /c/politics have volunteered for tribute and will be helping out on mod duties from here on out! Nice to meet you!

I’ll keep this short because you didn’t come here to hear me talk (“You’re right!”)

Job 1 is making the sidebar a little cleaner and easier to follow. I don’t want anyone to have any illusion as to why content got removed. It should always be clear and concise and not up for debate.

When it comes to copyrighted material, my opinion is super simple:

  1. Don’t repost the whole article. Boil it down to the 1 or 2 paragraphs that make the point. That falls under fair use.

https://www.copyright.gov/fair-use/

  1. If you can’t find the 1 or 2 paragraphs that makes the point, MAYBE that’s not the best article to use. 😉 “Brevity is the soul of wit” and all that.

  2. None of which matters if you use articles that aren’t paygated. If the whole thing is readily available, there’s no reason to copy/paste anything. See if you can find an alternate source.

  3. If you aren’t sure if something falls under fair use or not, assume it doesn’t. Err on the side of personal liability. “Could someone catch grief over this?” If yes, don’t paste it.

That’s it! Happy World Newsing! Verbing weirds language!

Edit OK, I lied. When posting from the web UI, it will helpfully offer to create an archive link of your choice. Archive links ARE allowed. I have cleared this personally with multiple admins now. If it proves to be a copyright issue, we can simply remove the link.

For some reason, my preferred apps, Boost and Voyager, don’t have that option. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really quite sad that I was removed without any sort of communication or a chance to respond, I have spent months removing posts and comments that were against the code of conduct. I have responded to criticism regarding the moderation of the community in the past and the way this has occurred has broken my heart about a community i cared about.

I’ll share some recent quotes from messages I’ve sent to other mods and admins:

“Hello I wanted to send a message to say that I am interested in helping more. I really like lemmy.world and want the platform to succeed and want to help.”

“Even if another is chosen for these roles I would be happy to help as a community moderator to help lemmy.world grow and continue to be the best lemmy instance! Thanks for everything you and the admin team do 🙂”

I tend to lean towards transparency in all things, so I’ll just say I have no direct knowledge of what drama may have led to the mod turnover. I just raised my hand when someone asked for volunteers. :)

So I’m here now and I bear no one ill will. Consider this a blank slate from here forward.

I’m a native Oregonian and one of my heroes was Tom McCall who was our governor from 1967 to 1974. While he’s best known for saying “We want you to visit our State of Excitement often. Come again and again. But for heaven’s sake, don’t move here to live. Or if you do have to move in to live, don’t tell any of your neighbors where you are going.”

But he ALSO said "Heroes are not giant statues framed against a red sky, they are people who say “This is my community and it’s my responsibility to make it better.'”

would you be willing to add me back to the team? I did nothing wrong and care about the world news community?

I can’t UNILATERALLY make that decision. Well, I mean, technically I COULD, but it wouldn’t be RESPONSIBLE moderation to do that on my own. Let me just say that I’ll raise the issue and see what turns up. Fair?

We were not informed the other mods were removed, we were asked to assist. We will be in contact with you on that.

thank you, I don’t really care about top mod and if i made some big mistake to be demoted from that i only wish to know so i can do better. If the admins don’t want me to be a moderator any more i would appreciate knowing what I did wrong for closure. I have been removed from the discord when removed from being a moderator so can only communicate here.

I have little idea what occurred. We are going to square things away, fix the copyright issues and sync things to align with c/news and c/politics so the three communities work in conjunction with similar rules and style.

The admins said their concern was with copyright and timely responses to reports.

Create post

A community for discussing events around the World

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
