I just replaced my old WD red 4tb with new WD red pro 8tb (WD8003FFBX) and its getting very hot and loud compared to the old one.

While I was transferring files temperatures got to 50, 51 degrees with a lot of sounds coming out of it. Is this normal?

Just click on the link and then look at your drive, you should be able to spot the difference immediately. Does it look as the drive above (helium) or below (air with the characteristic venting hole and everything)?

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data – legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they’re sure it’s done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time ™ ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.
