Sometimes I like to go look at animal adoption sites, I like finding the animal with the silliest name and photo. Today I thought I’d look at the Pet Rescue which is not my usual place to look, and WTF is with their adoption fees! Maybe I’m being unreasonable but up to $1.5k to adopt a dog… There were 400+ listed in VIC alone, and I can kind of understand why! For that much you could go get a brand new puppy sans all the issues that come with adopting a potentially mistreated dog.

I get it’s probably to deter people from making rash decisions, also folks who can afford to drop that much can also probably afford to care for the dog, and making sure that the dog goes to a good home, but it just seems insane to me.

Edit - I listed the wrong site. Sorry to The Lost Dogs Home for that one. Yikes to me!

Not sure where you are looking, most of the dogs I could see were $85. The most expensive was $800 for a young puppy.

Ah, Pet Rescue makes perfect sense. It’s a whole bunch of different “rescues”.

You need to do some research on where your pet comes from, whether that is a breeder or a “rescue” as not all of them are legit - some might just be trying to recoup their costs (which can be very high if they take in pets with high vet needs) but I have heard some just buy them from backyard breeders, sell them for a profit and call it a rescue, which helps get around breeding laws and appeals to the people who like the idea of rescue.

RSPCA has the best pricing and they are very careful to match pet and owner personalities and needs

Hey, you will see the occasional bonkers looking fee from places like Lost Dogs when they are certain the cat is pedigree even without papers. I don’t blame them. Some of those cats have specific needs and people can be made pause on ‘but pretty’ by the price.

I see nothing wrong with the mogs being more affordable at checkout.

Ted Cat was $400 on pet rescue. Pedigree but loads of problems. Bill was $160 at rspca, same pedigree and he’s been an awesome boy.

Those prices include all the medical care .
