has something like this already been posted? I tried searching, and I’m sure I don’t have original thoughts.

There are no cake days, this isn’t Reddit. Don’t try to make it Reddit. Let it be it’s own thing.

It is not Reddit, but Lemmy does show a cake next to the signing up date…

On Lemmy it is literally called cake day in your profile. Admittedly derivative, but I like cake so whatever.

Cake days were by far reddit’s most unproductive and inane tradition, they should’ve died long ago. I will personally see to it that every person wishing or attempting to wish a happy cake day is verbally harassed until they delete their account.

If I don’t see another “happy cake day” post again it’ll be too soon.

We could even make it a monthly event instead of yearly! I’m so excited to see how often we can say it on this fresh new platform!!!1

Ah yes, the most unproductive and inane of all of Reddit’s traditions. Oh the hate subs? Pfft, nothing on those dastardly cake days. /s

No but seriously, it’s not a big deal. It’s just an occasional comment about “happy cake day”. Kinda hope you’re being hyperbolic, but I’ve seen enough comments like this that I thought it worth replying to anyways.

I legitimately think reddit would be better if everyone who used the phrase “cake day” was permanently IP banned from the service. And hate subs aren’t really a reddit tradition, more a general Internet thing, but go off I guess. Also, fuck the S, it’s the second most unproductive and inane reddit tradition

I knew you’d say that! Did you know that the /s isn’t for you? Turns out, there are other people on the internet, some of whom have trouble with sarcasm, who really appreciate having these redundancies built into the text. Wow!

You’re not special. Neither am I. The more exalted you act, the harder reality will fight you to put you in your place. Your comfort is not exalted above mine or anyone else’s. What I’m trying to say is that, rather than making Reddit/Lemmy an echo chamber of your own design, we need to think about what is good for the community. I see no reason why cake days are anything more than a minor annoyance, and I’ve pointed out how the /s can benefit some people. The common ground in your analysis is that it pisses you off. What about everyone else?

There’s all sorts of shit I’m not at all interested in seeing, but I’m not going to advocate we ban it. I’ll just block the community if it’s that much of a problem.

IMO the /s serves as a great litmus test to suss out jackasses who lack empathy. I’m sorry if I sound jaded, but that’s just because I am jaded from seeing the same solipsism time and time again on Reddit.

Can we all collectively agree to ignore this shit? I always hated cAkE dAy, I had no idea when mine was, but I would log off for the day after the first person said it to me.

At least offer the option to hide it on your profile(do we even have those here?).

Just make an annual donation to Lemmy or charity of choice.

Charity is a great and noble idea, but I also find some real value in people giving me things, so I don’t want us to completely rule that out so quickly?

Fair. I used both Sync and Joey. (weirdly, my Joey is still working?!) I’ve been impressed with Connect’s developer. They’ve been running ragged keeping up with improvements. I was flabbergasted when I mentioned a slight quibble and it was fixed the next day.
