Houseplants is (I think) the only Mander community where I can’t see posts on Jerboa (or rather can only see 4 posts) though web app works fine, showing pages of posts. Just curious as to why that might be, maybe language setup? Maybe just an idiosyncracy of Jerboa?

I am able to replace what you are seeing in the browser by deselecting ‘English’ from my list of languages in the settings, and then clicking ‘save’:

As I understand it, the way it works is that when you deselect a language you will not see content that was explicitly set to that language.

So, it looks to me like your Jerboa is set to a language different than English. The strange thing is that you do see the content in the browser, so your settings do seem to include English. One guess is that maybe your phone’s language is set to a different language, and Jerboa could be using your phone’s language preferences instead of your Lemmy preference.

I will play around with the app later and if I find a better explanation I will come back!

(Note: I had a problem posting this comment and had to explicitly set it to English to post)

Actually, yes, you have solved this, thank you! It was my language setting, and I had somehow selected everything EXCEPT English 😅. Houseplants must be mostly in English while the rest of Mander may be undetermined? Many thanks to you and @tauzero for looking into this :)

Great!

Yes, some users are more thorough when it comes to selecting the language. I think that the philosophy behind it is that if everyone were organized it would be easier to create a multi-language federated universe in which people can filter content such that they will only see the language that they actually want to interact with.

In practice, the overwhelming majority of current users speak English, most posts are in English, and most users don’t explicitly select a language. So the practical effect that the language system has is that it creates some unexpected behavior and confusing situations. I’ve accidentally changed my language settings without noticing while changing other settings and doing so broke some communities, as you’ve noticed…

I think another problem is that the “dialog dropdown box with multiple selectable options” is a very rarely used feature on modern web. It is not obvious that multiple selections are possible (I have to ctrl-click them for example), and it is not clear which color is “selected” or “de-selected” (especially with multiple color themes available to us), leading to OP situation where everything BUT english got selected. It should be an unrolled list with individual “show/hide” ratio boxes, but that’s a problem for lemmy web interface developers to solve.

Are you using the same account on website and in the phone app? Do you have any special app options enabled, like nsfw filters, or “hide posts on read”?

That’s a good thought. I went to check, and yes, same account and settings on mobile and web apps. I’ve read when this happens across instances, there are federation issues, but mander is local, and Houseplants is the only mander community with disappearing posts for me. Does this happen for anyone else locally? If not, maybe just another blip in the fediverse ¯_ (ツ) _/¯
