This is the heart of Reddit - total coordination of random users uniting for a common cause and message.
What’s the back story for using John Oliver? What did I miss🤔
I have to agree - this is classic reddit. Spez obviously couldn’t care less about namecalling.
-
The corp gets to use the CEO as a punching bag - which is pretty much his job description…
-
Redditors can feel good about upvoting a picture “sticking it to the man” while actually doing nothing - participating on a site that’s still reaming them
-
Buying all the reddit awards for the post, GIVING THE COMPANY THEY’RE SUPPOSEDLY STICKING IT TO MORE MONEY. Bullshit like this pisses me off after finding out the Lemmy devs pretty much make less than minimum wage with donations
Pretty sure most awards given are free. My account has a bunch of coins on it for some reason.
I thought the free awards thing stopped a while back. I’d be surprised if a lot of people still had them
It helps that he’s a great person.
Plus, he’s reacted to people using his image in unusual ways before. He has an absolutely hilarious episode where he responds to someone mass generating AI created art of him in love with a cabbage. He noted the AI did a poor job, presumably through lack of adequate training data, so he married a cabbage in camera to help provide said training data!
Also, he might run it on his show, which adds fuel to the Reddit bonfire.
Why give money via awards to the website you’re protesting against?
When they had free awards, you could only give one every 24 hours.
The awards that are “paid for” using reddit coins, you can buy those any time. And some of the awards also gift the awardee coins in addition to the award. So even if you never actually have money to reddit, you could still end up with reddit coins. And what better use for them than to highlight the protests?
I can’t wait for Oliver to talk about this on his show and spend some stupid amount of money to help the cause
Regretfully, his show is currently shut down in solidarity with the writer’s strike.
The writers demands seem quite reasonable and I hope that this conflict is resolved.
Yep, and I can’t think of a single time when a striking union’s demands weren’t reasonable. You don’t strike on a whim; that is the last option for conflict resolution, and you’re not getting paid for the duration of it. That said, you’re going to make damn sure that your demands are reasonable and are likely to be met as soon as possible.
Strikes are also very visible, so you are going to want public opinion on your side. Thus, you’re even more encouraged to head to the negotiating table in good faith. But, every time it happens, higher ups always try to paint the strikers as greedy, entitled leeches demanding a handout (almost as if they’re projecting 🤔 ).
Personally don’t pirate stuff, but gotta support folks who are leaving Reddit. So… here I am I guess?
It’s never too late to start pirating. I’m sure plenty of folks here would be happy to hook you up.
Not to apply any pressure, mind you. If you’re just here to soak in the pirate culture tourists are fine too. There’s probably a gift shop, take free copies of anything you find in there.
