Quagmire can be used as a noun with two different meanings.

  1. A soft, soggy, swampy, area. (See marsh.)
  2. A difficult and troubling situation. (See predicament.)

The word has its origins with “quag” and “mire” to mean bog. The word is also figuratively used to mean “a difficult situation” (1)(2)(3)
