Hello, I just bought a lot of HGST 8TB SAS HDD HUH728080AL420 from 2016. They are helium drives, pre WD acquisition (I think). From what I understood, all drives pre 2017 from that line were always CMR, but now I’m not sure because my resilvering on drive replacements is multiple times slower than the WD SATA 8TB RED PLUS (which are known to be CMR). It’s not done yet so I don’t know how long it will take total, but it’s at LEAST 400% longer to replace my 2TB with one of these SAS drives than it was to replace my 2TB in the array with a SATA one.

Not only that, these SAS drives are supposed to be 7200 RPM instead of 5400RPM of the SATA WD Reds…

Help?

Pretty confident these are not SMR. In 8 drive raidz2 it’s about 24-36 hours to rebuild for me.

Resilvering a 8TB drive is naturally going to take longer than 2TB…
