I was originally going to get a Dell Poweredge 1950 but I saw that those things are pretty old, so I have decided to get a Dell Poweredge R710 instead. The seller I am purchasing it is selling it for $70 USD but with no ram. I found some good ram for it which is $40 USD. Should I get this server? All I’m running is a file server and game server and do not care about noise.
Nah, the virtual kvm in the remote management on them doesn’t work anymore. Go for a Rx20 series or newer. Those have a html5 based kvm.
R710 is e-waste. Try to get at least like a r730 with ddr4 ram. An r720 is still usable, but getting long in the tooth and only ddr3.
The R710 is a great solution if you find you’re not paying enough on your electric bill
Great for the winter time!!!
It’s why I still have a plasma TV.
Which I just powered on last week.
What’s your budget?
If you can, spend an extra ~$100 to get at least an R730 imo. You will get more performance and the $100 will pay for itself in power savings in less than 1 year.
R710 is Gulftown era, which is going to be really lacking in both core count (max 6/socket) and single thread performance compared to something a few gens later. I wouldn’t recommend buying anything older than an E5 v3/v4 platform.
Consider what it will cost to power. The payback for getting a R730 may be under a year.
