I currently have an Asus RT-AX88U Pro and an older Asus router acting as an AP in AiMesh configuration. I got the AX88U Pro for its VLANing capability, but I’ve realized I can’t implement granular FW policies between VLANs.

I’ve watched videos of Unifi routers and switches, and they seem to have all the configurability I could want without having to use a CLI. Additionally, I love the idea of their sleek PoE-powered WiFi APs, which no other mainstream vendor seems to have.

The biggest downside for me is that their equipment is limited to 1GB uplinks and (for now) I have a 1.4GB Internet connection. I imagine that fiber will eventually come to my house and I could get even more bandwidth. Having said this, I’m not sure I really “need” that much bandwidth for what I do. I’m willing to spend the money on Unifi equipment, but it’s irritating to limit my Internet speed especially when I’m paying all this money for expensive hardware.

I’d love to get your thoughts and opinions. Should I go Unifi? Are there other alternatives I should consider? I don’t want a super complex UI nor do I want to script, so solutions like PFSense just seem too much for me.

If your dead set on Unifi go nuts. But at least check out Omada.

Don’t be making expensive descions on a complete network stack just because it looks pretty.
