"Me, writing an email:
Iām using an exclamation point so you know Iām friendly and excited! But now Iām using a period so that you know Iām not crazy. Hereās another sentence with a period as a buffer, proving my normalness. Thanks so much!"
I feel horribly exposed right now.
As someone who works in sales, all my emails to customers are in this exact format
And hereās a vaguely annoyed sentence but I wonāt put a full stop at the end of it so that it seems like itās just an offhand comment and not a dig at you
If I put a full stop at the end it seems a bit too blunt.
Ohhhhhh. Penny drops.
I always interpreted those as meaning āso exasperated with you I canāt even finish my sentenceā.
Of late punctuation seems to be interpreted as aggression I will not participate in the madness full stop exclamation point period
I donāt. know. whether, to, be, dismayed; or: delighted!
I must be coming across as super aggressive and alpha.
And here I am reading it and just thinking āitās hard to take this buffoon seriously, he doesnāt even take the time to ensure proper punctuation before sending emails.ā
When you neglect to ensure clarity of your emails using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation, you steal time and energy from all the receivers who have to spend extra effort trying to understand what youāre saying. I find poor language to be arrogant and disrespectful.
OMG, I feel so seen rn š³
I used to have to respond to all the reviews people posed on the website where I worked and I was encouraged to use more exclamation points. I hated it.
In one short comment youāve made me go from vaguely appreciating a friendly, prompt and punctuated reply to a review, to making every exclamation punched message smell like sweet sticky corporate sarcasm.
Thanks. Iām a new me.
