Is it safe to use iCloud mail as login for AppleID? I created my apple account originally with gmail, but I’m slowly transitioning out of the google mail and am considering changing my Apple ID as well. But given that the mail is part of the account, is it safe to use it? Are there any guides how to best secure account while using icloud mail? Having a different mail as backup for recover? Something more?
You can’t use iCloud mail as Apple ID [update] You can’t setup an iCloud mail when you submit, after three months it is possible to change.
I think that’s only true if you are creating a new iCloud email address, I helped someone at work who was using their work email as their Apple ID and I believe there was a 90 day waiting period before their Apple ID could be set to that iCloud email address.
I can’t speak to the overall safety one way or another but for many years that was the only way to have an Apple ID, I used an @mac.com email for iCloud until they permitted changing your email address few years ago, now it uses my gmail address as you are doing.
As for safety, no matter which you choose, make sure you have 2 factor of some kind enabled on both the email and your Apple ID, that will make a bigger difference in my opinion.
Yes, it works just fine, just make sure you heed the backup instructions (like with any online account like this) if you are worried.
I switched mine from Gmail to my iCloud mail years ago. Absolutely no problems.
