I’m currently reading The Duke and I and the author is constantly using the word “acerbic”. I had never heard of the word before now and had to google the definition. The word has shown up so much that I’m tempted to go through the book and count its appearances lol.

Have you noticed any authors having favorite words that they use page after page?

Haruki murakami and blake crouch used “Polish off” in reference to finishing food/drinks a ton.

I’ve always been a fan of British author Dick Francis, but it wasn’t until I listened to his audiobooks that I realized he’s a big fan of “boring”.

As in, after I was beaten to a pulp, someone asked how I was and I said the bruises were quite boring.

There were two cases.

In Zafón’s books he constantly repeats the word “penumbra”.

In a Stephen King book called “Later”, the narrator repeats the word Later over and over again.

Usually for me it’s certain descriptors. And simultaneously I am such a big offender. I do love describing an ocean as “glittering/sparkling”

I notice this all the time! I listen to audiobooks most of the time, so hearing a word or phrase repeated can really grind. I recently finished a book where one of the main characters “pointed with her lips” over and over. In another (maybe the same one) the main character continually the exact same “bile in her throat” regardless of the stressor. Really?
