The army’s chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, says Israeli troops found the hostages Friday and erroneously identified them as a threat. He said it was not clear if they had escaped their captors or been abandoned.
So, this wasn’t an oopsie with crossfire. This was, IDF found three people and killed them. I think the implication is these three were alone and very likely unarmed. It’s hard to imagine how they could have been perceived as a “threat” by troops. If the hostages has noticed the IDF troops at all, they were probably coming toward them with hands up to be rescued. And the IDF fired on them.
This just goes to show how indescriminate the IDF is. “Perceived as a threat” just means “perceived to be Palestine.” There are no rules of engagement, just this time it bit the IDF in the ass.
You should probably look into who’s training US cops.
Or they were just running at them, maybe not shouting so as to not draw attention from Hamas. Or maybe they weren’t shouting because they were out of breath. Or perhaps they were shouting, but in a loud/distracting environment (e.g. a war or a big city) and the soldiers didn’t see them. Or maybe it was as you say. I don’t know, I’ve never been in a war zone and/or hostage situation, and I certainly didn’t see this situation. But apparently you were, because how else could you be so sure what happened? So, I’m glad you made it out alive <3
edit: according to another news source they were killed during combat https://www.jta.org/2023/12/15/israel/israeli-forces-mistakenly-kill-3-hostages-during-fighting-in-gaza-idf-says
I quoted the IDF spokesperson, who said nothing about crossfire or active combat, just fighting “in the area.” And that’s the IDF, who doesn’t have a great track record with honesty. Your just making shit up trying to find some way to justify indescriminate use of force. Even your made up scenarios, what rules of engagement would allow soilders to fire on unnarmed people just because they were running? If the IDF had any manner of restraint they wouldn’t immediately target people without assessing whether or not they were an actual threat, which these civilians clearly weren’t. They don’t, because there are no consequences for IDF killing civilians, except in this one instance because those civilians happened to be Israeli.
The person you replied to is giving the classic “they must have been acting suggestively” excuse.
I quoted the IDF spokesperson
You didn’t quote the spokesperson. You quoted the article that paraphrased the spokesperson. And that the whole situation, in which three people died, was summed up in one sentence didn’t make you wonder if you actually know all the details needed to pass judgement, instead you are absolutely sure that what happened confirms your already made up opinion.
the IDF, who doesn’t have a great track record with honesty
There is exactly no one denying this. That doesn’t mean that everything they say is a lie though, as that would make them very bad liars.
Your just making shit up
I’m making shit up, but I’m presenting it as hypotheticals. You are making shit up and presenting it as facts.
Even your made up scenarios, what rules of engagement would allow soilders to fire on unnarmed people just because they were running?
Notice how your quote of “the spokesperson” didn’t even say they that they were acting within the rules of engagement? And how you left out the “towards them” bit (which seems relevant to me in a conflict that sees suicide bombing)?

Fuck man… What a sad mess this whole thing is. Imagine being taken hostage for 2 fucking months by Hamas terrorist assholes only to eventually be killed by your own country’s army of incompetent trigger happy gung ho fuckwads.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
The army’s chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, says Israeli troops found the hostages Friday and erroneously identified them as a threat.
The deaths occurred in the Gaza City area of Shijaiyah, where troops have engaged in fierce battles against Hamas militants in recent days.
The Israel Defence Force (IDF) said in a statement on Telegram that it had identified two of the slain hostages as Yotam Haim and Samer Talalka.
The deaths were announced as a U.S. envoy said the U.S. and Israel were discussing a timetable for scaling back intense combat operations in the war against Hamas, even though they agree the overall fight will take months.
In response, Israel declared war and launched a campaign — that has included airstrikes and a ground offensive — aiming to rid the territory of Hamas and its infrastructure.
Health authorities in Hamas-run Gaza say more than 18,700 Palestinians have died in the besieged territory since the start of the war.
The original article contains 255 words, the summary contains 158 words. Saved 38%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
Saving Private Chaim
Friendly fire happens in war. Ultimately,it’s Hamas fault there were hostages to begin with.
I think there’s plenty of blame to spread around. The IDF seems awfully trigger happy, maybe these poor people would still be alive if they had tighter rules of engagement.
Yeah, it happens in particular when you carpet bomb the places where hostages are kept. Fucking christ.
Bullshit.

They were seen and shot, this was not during active combat or crossfire. They were alone. They were unarmed. They posed no threat to the IDF. And they were targeted and killed because the IDF has no qualms with targeting and killing civilians. They just killed their own civilians this time.
