With all of the controversy surrounding Reddit these days, now’s a great time to think about alternatives to the platform. I personally believe that decentralisation and federation is the future for social networks, removing the power from single (generally commercial) entities and putting it into the hands of the actual users.

It’s definitely early days for the Fediverse and there are certainly going to be growing pains as the different software platforms continue to develop and improve, but it seems like it’s gradually gaining traction. The exodus of users from Twitter to Mastodon being another example.

For now, the moderators of /r/peloton want to continue on the Reddit platform, which is completely understandable. The idea definitely isn’t to fragment the existing /r/peloton community, which is huge and deeply entrenched in the Reddit platform. Maybe a new community name to differentiate would be in order.

There’s also an existing /r/peloton community in the Fediverse on kbin.social, but it isn’t extremely active quite yet and kbin.social seems like it may not be federated at the moment.

Personally, I don’t actually have time to moderate an online community (nor do I have much experience with it), but I thought I’d get the ball rolling by creating this community (as well as lemmy.ml/c/peloton, but this one seems to be gaining the most users so far).

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments?

I think at the moment lemmy.world/c/procycling is the most active community about cycling. Would be good to all join the same community for now, so that it gets a bit more active.

This community is not active at the moment.

This is one possible Fediverse alternative to /r/peloton/ on Reddit. The Fediverse is a more open and independent alternative to traditional social networks.
