Start with this movie if you want to watch the show.

The show takes place years after the movie and replaces the main actors (although some of the original movie actors do end up in the show from time to time!)

Honestly you can skip this movie entirely and go straight into the show, Children of the Gods (The first ep, a 90 minute movie) will recap enough information covered in the movie.

And the show is infinitely better than this movie.

Is the director’s cut different in an interesting way? i have the standard version on vhs and watched it a hundred times as a kid.

Not really.

Mostly there’s a scene at the beginning that is in ancient Egypt with the kid that went on to host Ra. It’s just a slightly longer version of the story Daniel tells later in the movie, but slapped at the beginning where you have no idea what you’re seeing.

I can’t think of any other notable changes.

Interesting to compare this movie to 10,000 BC, also by Emmerich. I think 10,000 BC is a slightly superior movie. I wish Stargate had gone a different direcion after the first 30 minutes and been a lot more “serious,” like Contact or Arrival.

For example:

Star Wars: A New Hope (1977 720p)

Even if you’ve already seen a movie before, take a moment and tell us what you think about it, what’s good / bad / etc… I’d love to see more conversation around the films we share here.
