I’m not sure if there is a bigger platform here on Lemmy discussing new releases, but Barbie was awesome. I had a smile on my face pretty much the entire time. The kens were hilarious. I thought it was a bit heavy handed at times but as a male, I’m sure it’s just a bit of ignorance on my part.
Would love to hear what everyone’s thinking!
It was great. Like the Lego movie it felt aware of what it was and did a good job of not just making fun of itself, but also having a surprisingly heartfelt message.
I thought it was delightful.
Ryan Gosling was so funny as Ken. It’s right up there with his comedy chops in The Nice Guys
It’s a fun movie and some of the comedy is brilliant in its timing and execution. Re the movie’s messaging, this is personal taste but I wish they’d found a way to have the movie say all of that without going full “This is John Galt Speaking”.
Great movie, really did a good job of expressing the impossible expectations of women.
What really stuck out to me was barbie comforting ken after he wronged her through the whole film, him not apologizing or trying to right the wrong.
Love the dichotomy of a film made by matel, touting it recognizes the capitalist/patriarchical problems barbie introduces, while simultaneously spending millions making a film and selling it, and actually having a white male ceo
