Without Valetudo I wouldn’t have considered buying a robot vacuum in the first place.

The software is mature and the community is available to help new users root their robots. Just do not expect it to work with random robots (stick to supported robots) nor for every feature to be supported.

I strongly advice everyone to read the documentation thoroughly (especially Why not Valetudo and [FAQ] (https://valetudo.cloud/pages/faq.html)) before getting involved.

Does rooting no longer require specialized hardware?

You mean the breakout board? You can root with a breadboard but the breakout board is strongly recommended and there are lots of people ready to send you a kit or lend you their board.

Dennis Giese (one of the two people working on Valetudo) is sending PCBs in the US. He even created a form to request a kit: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdJEdx74kYoQfTt73coFNPp86pZ4a4o8M-sN8EsV0jvBQvQqg/viewform

This seems like a brilliant solution to a problem that shouldn’t exist.
