Hey there everybody, I’m DVD.

I came to the Fediverse/Lemmy recently after the mass exodus from, competitors, like I’m sure many of you have.

I’ve been knees deep in learning the German Language since October, and I wanted a community to help myself and others along in this process of language learning, which I noticed Lemmy lacked, so I created c/German.

I should preface this community by saying that I am probably the least qualified person to run a community such as this. I would probably fail the Goethe B1 Exam for German, and I have never moderated any community before, not on Lemmy nor its competitors.

But, I saw the need for a place like this, and I stepped up to the plate. If you are seeing this and are interested, feel free to join. If the place isn’t quite as lively as you thought it would be, try creating a post or commenting on some existing ones. I promise to work on community engagement as this place (hopefully) grows.

With that being said, also message me if you are interested in any moderator roles. I will gladly accept others who are willing to make sure this community stays on track, and remains toxic-free.

Thank you so much for starting this community! I don’t think you need to be a German ace to moderate it, and being a learner amongst learners is a good thing - you know what we are going through!

I too am a refugee from another place ;-) and I’m trying to find communities to replace the one I’ve mostly lost. This is one of the most important ones to me.

I’m glad you found it! I noticed that Lemmy seems to have a very sizeable German population so hopefully a few natives will help learners on here.

Sorry for late response – Mlem has no notifications to my knowledge atm – I’ve noticed that as well. It’s good for getting my exposure to the language up.

The German Language

Create post

Welcome to the place to learn the German Language! Come here to discuss topics or quirks related to the German language, ask any questions about learning German, provide tips to current learners, and share your journey through the German-learning process!

RULES

  • Make sure anything you plan on asking has not already been answered.

  • No harassing someone over their level of the language of German. Everyone starts somewhere.

  • No harassing period actually. Obviously no bigotry falls under this category.

  • In general, no low effort posts or spam. If you ask a question and it didn’t receive much engagement, don’t go on to ask it again immediately, at the least remove the original copy.

  • No NSFW. This rule has its loose limits and some exceptions (i.e. commenting on German “dirty talk” and whatnot is alright).

  • Mods are the interpreters of these rules, and have jurisdiction over other cases where a rule isn’t explicitly mentioned here, but it is a common sense rule.

  • This community is largely for English speakers learning/discussing German. Other languages aren’t outright banned yet, but expect minimal support. If other communities arise for German help in other languages, then those languages will be barred from this community in favor of the new one.
