It seems that I’m unable through either ineptitude or issue to view long pictures. Help?

No it’s the app. Pictures swipe away too easily

The dev mentioned in another post on this issue that they’ll add a toggle for the feature that lets you swipe to dismiss the image viewer, which can cause unintended problems for some, in the next update. I’m guessing we’ll see it in a day or two.
