I’m not interested in doing android dev (actually I am, but not the way any of the toolchains I found so far want me to, and so the learning curve is just too steep for me), but “someone” should take the lead. Maybe do a soft fork, open PRs, and nudge the maintainer. Who knows, possibly they will be giving commit rights. 🙂
