They were one of the biggest userbases that was still federated.

That was pretty inevitable for a Canadian instance. I’m surprised things lasted this long.

This is my opinion on it. There was no way we’d be federated with a Canadian instance for long. Though, their defederation does seem to be the admin’s own emotional reaction as opposed to the actually reasonable legal issues they might face.

Yeah. Ppl were like “omg this is heinous, this is an obvious defederation”. https://sh.itjust.works/post/378141

Couple of things in that conversation:

Drawn child porn

I can just imagine those words being spoken by a prosecutor to a jury and things not going well for the defendant. Kinda scary how far removed my thoughts seem to be from the average person on this.

instances that allow abusive content is a red line for me.

Yeah, those poor GPUs being abused.

I’m disappointed honestly. I still think that Lemmy would be well served by some community flag other than NSFW that makes certain communities a little more hidden. I also do think it was a bit of a knee jerk reaction, but its hard to criticize when they can say “its Canada law”.

I also disagree with Canada law on this, but Canadians seem pretty happy to elect people who tell them what to think, so IDK.

Someone made a suggestion on here that a tag feature, where instances could add their own tags which could be used to mark content on a per-instance basis. These tags would have basic controls on what happens when a post/comment has one of these tags applied to them.

I definitely think this would be a great feature, though I have my doubts about it ever being developed.

The discussion there makes me sad. On a practical level defederation is a reasonable inevitability, but the level of vitriol in there is neither productive nor healthy, for anyone.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

I find it amusing how often these groups say “No bigotry” in their rules, but make the exception whenever it fits their beliefs. Almost like it’s virtue signalling or something.

Not to mention the predictable “No *phobia”. Which in of itself is intolerance of other views.

That’s an incredibly stupid point, my dude, ot to be a dick or anything.

Edit: i figured i might look like a dick if i leave it there so; no one cares about being intolerant, intolerance is a virtue. People care about what you are intolerant about.

I think their point is that it’s hypocritical how people often mean that (‘people should be intolerant of things I think are bad’) when saying the opposite (‘intolerance is bad’). For those who do care about intolerance and do think it’s bad - certainly not no one - it’s confusing and frustrating and sad.

Couldn’t agree more. What I see there is knee-jerk reactions and a lot of, well just like you put it, vitriol, which I think is the perfect way to describe it.

It looks like we’ll become one of those “islands” in the so called fediverse. There’s the growing continent of Rexxit refugees across the pond.

But I’m okay with that. We don’t need to share space with far right lunatics this time, so we can focus on lewd stuff.
