Came across a tape that has recordings from the mid-80s. Sanggol pa lang ako when it was recorded so hindi ko pa maalala (or aware) na ganun pala TV during those days. ABS-CBN went by the name BBC-2 kasi binigay yung network nila to some Marcos crony. And I prefer the look of the title cards.

Bilib din ako sa kung sino nag-record nito. Dude literally left his VCR recording the whole time so kuha pati commercials and bumpers. This practice is unheard of kasi we tend to pause during commercials and resume pag start na ulit ng program to save space (mahal kasi tape). Feel ko tuloy the owner has several of these lying around pero most likely napatungan na or nawala.

Also just discovered an old interview by Ted Koppel with Ferdinand Marcos from 1982 sandwiched in between some movie recordings. This is the first time I heard Makoy Sr. talk that isn’t on some documentary and here’s a few take aways:

  1. Marcos pronounces years as “nineteen-hundred and seventy-two” instead of “nineteen-seventy two”.

  2. Kasing-asim niya sina Noynoy at Gloria kung mag-react sa mga criticism/allegations towards his administration. He didn’t like the intro piece that aired before his interview at all, lol.

  3. Ted Koppel is a great interviewer. How I wish ganun ako kagaling mag-communicate with others. He’s so inoffensive and articulate.

  4. Marcos talks really really well. Most Presidentiable out of anyone I’ve seen since I was born. At the same time, sa sobrang galing niya magsalita he can easily sway the narrative in his favor when rebutting accusations. Like dumami raw middle class nung panahon niya in response to the inequality between the poor and the rich - bad (bordering on nonsensical) argument but he sells it well.

  5. Apparently he was trying to pivot away from strongly supporting the U.S. around this point and doesn’t appreciate the one-sided deals they want.

This month’s Ask PHlemmy: What’s a now “obsolete” technology you miss?

I miss DAPs, particularly Zune. I still have mine lying around and working but support for it (e.g. music store, software) is gone now. Smartphones have third-party apps but the Zune UI is much better and a DAP just play distraction-free music.

I had a Zune HD! It was perfect.

But looking at the screen today (heck, kahit nga nung 2016 lang) mapapansin mo kaagad how dated the tech is. The pixel density is so, SO bad. Pero yung UI niya with the artist background and album art pati navigation and UX, hanggang ngayon walang peer — and I’ve cycled through so many modern DAPs from FiiO and Astell & Kern, wala lahat sinabi. Hindi ko tuloy alam kung patented ba ni Microsoft yun or what.

I had this Hitachi audio player –

news-cdn.softpedia.com/images/news2/Hitachi-Announced-Brand-New-HMP-X5-MP3-Player-2.jpg

It was robust and light. The 🔋 life was OK. Had more than enough storage so I put my other files on it. It was an audio player and a usb drive for me. 1 downside was that it wasn’t fast. There was a bit of lag when I pressed a button and the thing appeared on the screen. So I couldn’t press many buttons very fast. It wouldn’t keep up.

I lost it a long time ago. Idk how.

Just saw a review of the new Nokia 3210 2024 version.

Nate-temp ako dahil parang may space invaders na game.

Actually bit the bullet today and bought a NextFun 2in1 Tablet/Laptop. Che-check ko kung kaya nya ba punan ang multimedia needs ko: occasional socmed via browser + Stardew Valley with Mods + Android Apps via Waydroid. Hoping sana na dumb phone yung next phone ko since namamatay na yung compact phone segment.

@decadentrebel @the_yaya Saves storage and battery to your main phone too!
I’d love for feature phones to support Spotify and other streaming services so we can bootleg them as a DAP.
For the mean time, I tried a Zune-like launcher for an old 13" Android but its battery life became unusable anymore °~°

Physical media, like pictures and games that physically existed that you can hold, store, in shelves, frames, etc. I see the streaming and digital and, its nice, but it’s prevalence has made it easier to make those just disappear from you, like cloud storage, and degradation of storage.

Just wanna share that ₱-37000 Asus Vivobook 💻 (please see the pic above), if anyone is looking for a great-value 💻. Core i7-12650h at 37000 on Lazada. Great deal. I bought a Ryzen-7-5800h Asus Vivobook from Lazada in December 2023. If I knew that 12650h Vivobook then, I’d pick the 12650h.

What are your thoughts on Framework? Wala pa sa Pinas pero is it a good quality when compared to other laptops?

I like that it’s eco-friendly. Idk re its quality. I hope it’s robust. The idea is that you’ll keep the body for many years and just change parts. The body should be truly robust.

perfect for DIY-ers plaything got an old framework mainboard?

  1. buy those usbc to lan modules and 3d print your self your own router
  2. turn it into a handheld
  3. if you’re a god at engineering create you own dual screen laptop akin to the asus zenbook duo / lenovo yoga book 9i
  4. in to music production? usbc to headphone jack modules got you covered

the only problem is availability tbh I would’ve bought it

Without checking, I assume the memory here is only 8gb. If so, is it soldered? Soldered ram has always been my problem with these laptops.
