A popular feature in other social media is tip crypto like Nostr using Lighting and Farcaster using Ethereum tokens.

There is no social media using tipping as piconeros, looking for opinions and discussion if this could be done in Monero.town?.

There is, I’m using it right now. Try to click on the “fediverse” icon near my comment, and on my site you’ll see a donation button.

The easiest way is to convince Lemmy devs to implement profile fields: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/2411

After that you can add a machine readable XMR address to your profile

UX wise better have a tip button for each comment, profile fields is a good idea too.

@gunnm @monero The address from profile field can be displayed near each comment. This is how tipping button works on my site.
But if you want to count tips, and do it for each comment separately, that’s much more complicated. I don’t know if plugin system will be powerful enough for this.

The idea could be revisited when Jamtis got implemented. Then you could just give away the key for generating new addresses (for every comment).

But I’d prefer a field in the profile for donation links. Then you could probably check for if it is a link to a site or a crypto address and then show a ‘Send tip button’. If one doesn’t want a custodial wallet you just open the address in an external wallet.

Let nutomic build out the plugin system before work gets started on anything like this. These sorts of things have a way of drastically changing before they’re done. Depending on how the plugin system is built this could be possible.

You don’t really need a plugin though, Reddit has had tip bots for a long time and one could easily be built, but it would be custodial. I don’t see though how a Lemmy plugin would not be custodial, but we will see I guess.
