I want to host some engine, but don’t know which. I know about searxng and 4get, for example, but I know that there are a lot of other search engines. Here is question: how to pick one and by what criteria?

In my experience the best way to find out is to spin up your own instance and play around with it! Docker makes this super easy because you can throw it away after without making any changes to your server. Searxng works pretty easily in a docker container

I played with a couple and went with searxng, because I was happiest with the results I was getting back from it compared to the other ones (or, for that matter, a normal Google or Bing search).

What’re you wanting to use it for, what are your main concerns?

I’d recommend searxng, but mostly because I don’t have experience with very many others. I’ve never had any issues with it either.

Check out a public instance if the engines you’re interested in and see which you like more?

@someoneFromInternet I’ve tried some self hosted (and not self hosted) meta search engines and in the end I started using startpage.com
