Does this ruby actually exist? There seem to be almost no references to it online. A Rolling Stones article, OP’s link, and a couple of reddit posts. It does not appear on Wikipedia’s list of world’s largest rubies. As recently as last year, this would have placed #1 on world’s largest rubies sold.

Something smells fishy here.

it’s literally mentioned that Mark Mothersbaugh bought the ruby before carving it. It’s supposed to be a joke about the type of person who’d buy such a thing, well look in the mirror. imagine trying to make a mockery of rich people and this is the avenue you do it with

I used to like Devo. I still like their 70s stuff but they’ve never been as subversive as they claim to be.

Not only did Marky mark buy the world’s largest ruby gemstone because he’s fucking rich, he also fucking never actually sold it and kept the shit-shaped gem

Not only is he a racist, he’s one of dumbass uber-rich.

He’s rich from a long and successful multimedia art career. And I can’t find any source that says he bought it, it seems to still be owned by James Zigras, the mineralogist friend. He just carved it.

Not sure about the racist bit. DEVO definitely utilized racial stereotypes, but the consensus seems to be that it was very clearly satirizing systemic racism. I dunno if Mothersbaugh has any other history of sincere racism, but I can’t find anything.
