Hi, Mlem App Community!

We on the Mlem Team wanted to share some data from our TestFlight so far with you all to let you know how popular the app is.

The Testing Numbers

So far, we have just over 8k beta testers for the Mlem App! That’s out of 10k total test slots in TestFlight, which means that we’re close to our max allowable testers! That’s a lot of adoption for a week since our announcement!

Also, 89% of currently-registered testers have the latest build installed and are currently testing (meaning 11% deleted the app but are still registered), and there’s a 34.6% reporting rate for crashes-- meaning some of you could do a better job with crash reporting.

New Recruits

Last week, we posted a call for new contributors, and you, the community, stepped up! We’ve added a bunch of new developers and designers, including those with expertise in accessibility compliance, helping us to make sure that everyone will be able to use our app, using all of the system’s features iOS provides and meeting a11y standards. With new UX designers, we’ve overhauled our interface, and with new graphic designers, we’re bringing a great starter set of custom icons, with more to follow in future releases. And, most importantly, after an internal reorganization, higher-quality and more regular updates will follow with more strict project management, bug tracking, and resource delegation-- all thanks to the lemmy community coming together to make a great app for everyone!

Development & Feedback

The app testing is going well and development is proceeding apace. We’ve heard tons of positive feedback, and we’re thrilled to hear that everyone is loving the app. We’ve also been listening to all of your excellent feedback. We’ve put everything into our Issue Tracker on our GitHub project page, and we’re working through them, along with all of the bugs you’ve been reporting and new features we’re planning, and we’re working on a huge update for our next beta, which we hope to release very soon!

So, keep testing, stay excited, and check back here for updates, and discussion about the Mlem App!

Cheers!

Great work. Thanks for your hard work.

I’d like to make a couple of points if that’s ok:

  • I had marked some subs as favourites within the Mlem app, but they have been removed from my favourites since the update to version 0.0.7 Beta (I’m not complaining btw, just wanted to make you aware in case it affects other users too).

  • I noticed that the posts themselves support Dynamic Text (a feature that enables users to choose the size of onscreen text in iOS) as well as the text box to leave a reply…. But the actual comments on the posts are always at a fixed size. It makes it difficult for people with visual impairments because they can’t increase the size of the font in the comments. I can’t find this issue mentioned on the Github board. Am I allowed to request the feature there even though I’m not a dev?

Again, thanks for your hard work.

Currently says “This beta is full.” Any plans or ability to expand the beta?

Do I reply to that post? Or am I missing some link?

For those who read this, to join the beta you click on the link in the post linked in the parent comment

Hello, I’m LOVING the slide options for voting and replying in the new Memmy up - they work well!

Is there a way to create a new post in the app? If there is I can’t find it.

Are there plans or an ETA for iPad landscape scaling? Currently it uses the iPhone-style UX (small vertical window in the middle of the screen) on an iPad.

If you could make this look and function just like Narwhal that’d be greeeaaat lol

Edit (from website): also not seeing a way to edit a comment yet. And apparently using * for italics (and I’d assume bolding as well) doesn’t work yet.

Edit x 2: apparently editing on the webpage made the * italics work.

Rules

  1. Keep it civil.
  2. This is a forum for discussion about Mlem. We welcome a degree of general chatter, but anything not related to Mlem may be removed at moderator discretion. This is not a forum for iPhone/Android debate. Posts and comments saying nothing but “iOS bad/I use Android” will be removed as off-topic.
  3. We welcome constructive criticism, but ask that it be both precise and polite.

FAQ

  • When will insert feature here be implemented?
    • Check our issue board–if there isn’t an issue open for the feature you want, feel free to open an issue or make post! Just remember that devs are people too–we’re doing this for free in our spare time, and building a quality app takes a lot of patient work.
  • Is Mlem available for Android?
    • No. Mlem is written using SwiftUI, which is not currently supported on Android. If such support becomes available, we will look into bringing Mlem to our Android friends.
  • How do I join the beta?
    • We are currently testing our new 2.0 codebase on TestFlight. We have two beta groups: a weekly group that receives the current state of our development branch every week, and a stable group that receives a curated pre-release build at the end of each development cycle.
