I know the correct answer is to stop using Facebook, but there’s a couple communities I follow for certain updates I can’t get anywhere else.

Is there a good third party open source app for Android?

Just use your browser with an ad blocker activated.

FB intentionally breaks their mobile site so that you have to use the app for most features.

Last time I checked (which, I admit, was several years ago), it was usable for viewing normal posts, which is all the OP wants.

Using Firefox mobile with an ad blocker but it doesn’t block Facebook ads or sponsored posts.

Get a private DNS that does it for you. I really don’t have any recommendations since I rarely browse the internet when I’m not at home, but I do know it’s a thing.

Iirc they’re pretty cheap.

the only available solutions are wrappers for the mobile website, like SlimSocial.

This is what I use. Not amazing, but given it’s possible to use Messenger through it as well if needed, it’s better than nothing.

Yup slim is what I’ve been using for ages. I’m disappointed that recently I can no longer get messages in it, but I accept that. Just have to open a browser and login there. Sigh

Frost is the one I use (on F-droid). I like the interface.

Edit: forgot to add it’s a wrapper.

I agree, there does appear to be a few issues atm. Hoping they’ll get sorted soon.

@StorageB

Blokada is better than a network based VPN (It’s a local VPN that applies a blocklist)

It enforces security and privacy by blocking ads and trackers.
