Hey, I wanna start building a media library because I’m annoyed with all the streaming services. Only problem is, that I’m from germany with strict laws. Anyone here got experience with torrenting movies and stuff in germany?

you’ll be fine when using a VPN, just make sure it doesn’t leak. in qbittorent you can assign the network interface directly to the VPN.

or get a seedbox

Bind your vpn to the torrent client. Do NOT trust the vpn’s Killswitch. They can, and will, leak.

Option one: Join private tracker communities, no need for a vpn here. You will find the majority of stuff here anyway, compared to public torrents.

Option two: Get and set up a vpn (preferable with port forwarding) in your bittorrent client. Bind your vpn connection to your network interface in qbittorrents advanced settings option page.

Option three: Use usenet, since there is no upload involved on your side you also need no vpn.

Piracy in Germany is kinda rare, don’t expect to find many pirates in your private sphere. However if you find some, chances are they will try to stop your from torrenting and advise file hosters like ddownload or rapidgator. It’s very common for German pirates, torrenting has a bad reputation due to law firms hunting down pirates.

Just be careful after updating qBittorrent, sometimes the update resets the network binding and you have to go in and fix it.

Probably missed a checkbox to keep settings or something, but it’s better to confirm after upgrading, then miss a change and have your torrent run in the open.

Option one is kinda busted because your ISP can see what you’re doing. Also there have been cases of people getting sued anyway in semi-private trackers like IPT and TL.

ISPs don’t spy on users, would violate GDPR.

Long story short: You’d get more money from your ISP than you’d pay to copyright trolls.

I always like to tell people about i2p. It can be very slow and you can’t get torrents from the clearweb but it is the absolute top tier for privacy / not getting isp letters. Also if you do try it I recommend i2p+ which works on anything with java. (don’t let the exe fool you it runs as a jar)

Been doing it for years. As the other commenter said, use the interface selection in qbt. Test it with a Ubuntu torrent (completely legal) and go from there.
