It’s all relative – the bar was 3.4 percent Asian characters in 2007, according to the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s latest report.

Honestly I think the reason is appealing to the increasingly powerful foreign film markets. That’s the big driver.

Plus there’s all these Asian American actors who think they’re creating the Asian American cultural narrative now, and studios are willing to give them small budgets to have Awkwafina and her gang tell some melancholic and pseuodoprofound story.

… Ok some of it is good but I also feel like it is way too ethnocentric.

I do think this means that unfortunately the majority of asian roles are going to the handful of Asian actors who were in Crazy Rich Asians. There should be an Impossible Difficulty challenge to find an American-made Hollywood film starring asians who weren’t in Crazy Rich Asians.

That’s a good question, just saw the announcement today.

IDK, to be honest. The EH community is extremely abrasive for the most part, so I’m worried that if y’all join a free-speech supporting Lemmy, Kbin, or Lotide instance, y’all might drive the admins to crack down a bit and stiffen up their guidelines.
