DAE science!! Also the fuck is this article: https://www.science.org/content/article/are-diamonds-earth-s-best-friend-gem-dust-could-cool-planet-and-cost-trillions

“to solve climate change we must shoot 5 million tons of diamond dust into the atmosphere”

Yes and the reason scientists keep having to come up with these stupid fucking ideas is because they’ve become jaded to the fact that capitalism didn’t listen to them when they told them to stop destroying the Earth. They aren’t listened to, they’re told to be more “reasonable” by liberals and so we come to this.

It’s been incredibly sad watching ecologists have their spirits slowly stamped out after decades of pleading for the ruling class to listen to them and transition away from capitalism. But because capitalism cannot be questioned they have had to make do.

Environmental science is basically trying to desperately do damage control without questioning the almighty invisible hand. Liberals have ordered scientists to compromise, but the natural world doesn’t work like that, so basically for Earth now it’s death by capitalism at this point, or overthrowing capitalism and trying desperately to salvage what we have and put policy in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Oh and the “it’s to late now” liberals piss me off the worst, because we all saw this coming a mile away. Warned for decades, possibly even a century in advance, how very convenient for capitalists to not fix the problem, and then bemoan it being too late so they can continue their rapacious business as usual. How dare they not only absolve the villains of their responsibility but continue to allow them to keep eating the corpse of their victim.

we’ll likely need science to step in and save the day

They already told you how to save the day, you just didn’t like the answer.

Its funny when they always quote the cost of saving the planet and ourselves.

As if someone will always say

“Yes it would cost 5 trillion green bucks , geez I guess that’s too much. You know I think I prefer the entire human extinction and destroing the planet for millions of years sorry not sorry.”

I kind of believe we’re fucked for small reasons like this, every single time, without fail, actions necessary to save ourselves are measured and justified based on some material cost.

Technology isn’t fucking magic. And Musk isn’t a magician (more like a glorified middle manager and conman).

I don’t even think this is “high-technology”.

They’re literally just proposing blasting 5 million tons of diamond dust into the atmosphere.

It’s definitely ridiculous and I wouldn’t even call it technology. It’s grasping at straws. And the more liberals ignore the reality of climate change and the need for a complete change in how we run society (and let’s be real, only communism is an economic model compatible with life on earth since it’s not profit driven) the more ridiculous their ideas and hopes for technological fixes (to allow the status quo to be maintained) will become to the point that they’re basically hoping for magic. This is what Musk and his ilk are promising. A promise they will spectacularly fail to deliver on (to the surprise of nobody on this site).

Scientists do not step in. They do not do things. They enable the actions of those with actual power, to do what they want.

My experience of studying physics was that the vague Ideal Scientist to fit within the desires of capitalist funding wasn’t Einstein (not that they tell you his politics) or even Oppenheimer (not that they tell you that he wanted to use the bomb) - it was the Wehrner Von Braun from the song. Hell, even Von Braun’s a bit iffy for being so well-known.

A sagacious detachment from politics/reality and a noble focus on driving the field forwards in whatever ways are funded, for whatever reason.

Environmental scientists are significantly better than this, of course. But even they have the pressures of pretending Carbon Capture and other dead ends are a thing because the moneybags will not accept otherwise.

A slightly random aside: It’s one of the more realistic parts of Fallout - a couple years before the bombs dropped, they solved clean energy and resource constraints (fusion and replicators). The government simply didn’t share.

Edit: And as others have said they have already solved climate change and told us all the solutions, decades ago.

You make a really good point about the role of scientists under capitalism. I mean just look at the nobel prize ceremony. It resembles the Oscars more than an academic event.
