Is this in a hotel? I suppose that’s technically true. It’s not like they have to give you a room key. Also, people lose them and they get demagnetized and stuff. I’ve had to replace mine more than once. So maybe that’s what they mean?

I’m trying to be as generous as I can because I really don’t want it to mean something worse.

Not sure if OP’s one is a hotel or not, but the website did mentioned it’s an app-based key for company, like hotel or maybe business building idk.

https://saltoks.com/

So they probably won’t give you a card anymore, just have to download the app, agree to the permission(hopefully no access needed), and get the key digitally. How safe it is? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: the “As a service” thing is probably rental, they provide the equipment and you pay the company monthly.

Yes, it’s a hotel. And I guess that makes sense

I mean; digital access control isn’t all that new. The entrances to my apartment building uses RFID tags, so tags(keys) can be added/removed easily without modifying the physical lock.

This is more or less the same thing, just expanded to use the RFID/near-field built into most mobile phones as well as physical cards/tags. I guess the ‘service’ part would be the addition of cloud services + apps to make remote monitoring/config/user management easier?

Not the kinda thing I like having in a third parties control, or dependant on internet…

From reading their website, I think you are spot on with your analysis.

What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.
