The beta for groups will release later this week, which won’t be federated initially. Federation will be added afterwards.

Looks like it will have some interesting features like videos, polls, and events, as well as moderator tools like limiting what a user can do.

lemmyloves.art was just created and there’s also literature.cafe, but there definitely should be more focused instances being created, instead of general-purpose ones.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, I’ve compiled a fairly sizeable list of focused instances. More would be cool, but there’s a fair number to check out already.

Thanks for the shout out! I agree, more niche hobby focused instances are better.

Thank you for actually creating it! Moderating even a small community is difficult, I cannot even imagine what it’s like for a whole instance. I wish you luck and hope it takes off!

Today there was a post about an art instance for Lemmy 😊

Maybe someone will create one on Pixelfed too

Aw thank you for the shout out! I run lemmyloves.art as well as literature.cafe I contemplated making an art focused instance on pixelfed over lemmy but the software just generally isn’t there yet imo. Maybe someday I might give it a shot provided if I get donations to help sustain my current instances on lemmy. I like pixelfed and it’s rapidly development though, it’s extremely promising.

I just made an account on literature.cafe last night. :) Haven’t gotten around to logging in and doing anything yet, but I like having a couple alts to see unique local feeds and such, and yours looked so interesting! I love how federation allows for those kinds of interest-specific instances. Can’t wait to explore yours. :)

If it reaches a certain critical mass. These things always have a tech bias at the beginning because it’s the nerds who invent them.

I hope Lemmy eventually picks up more features like polls. I miss natively embedding polls.

And I hope you can view the result WITHOUT HAVING TO SIGN IN REDDIT/TWITTER HMMMM

Looks smooth and I can see a lot of good things about this, but I also hope it doesn’t slowly shift Pixelfed away from being an image sharing site. I really don’t want my feed over there cluttered up with other things than photography and occasional traditional art - polls and text posts is just not what I’m there for.

Still, I’m sure they’ve thought about that, and there’s some great potential for art groups. :)

God forbid our endless feed of cat pictures and black and white telephone poles gets polluted!

I just saw this response. Our telephone poles are safe - text posts will be groups only.
