Fireworks are very bad this year. We tried some kind of brownie that was $5 bucks and supposed calm him and a product called July 3. Both did not work. What is your best product for dogs and calming them during fireworks?

My parents’ dog is terrified of fireworks and the only thing that helps him is a xanax prescription from his vet.

It’s my puppy’s first 4th of July so I made sure he had a busy, fulfilling day and I’m getting lots of enrichment activities ready for him to put out when the sun goes down. We’ve got the windows closed and I’m going to put on music for him. When there are fireworks he and I are going to hang out and play BoomCookie – he hears a boom, he gets a cookie. Hopefully he’ll decide it’s not that big of a deal. (But I don’t have high hopes because his breed are meant to be watch dogs and he’s an alert barker… 😬)

I’ve heard good things about thundershirts (weighted coats to make them feel cuddled) and happy hoodies (tube hat to cover their ears). My sister tried a thundershirt for her puppy that was afraid of thunder and it helped quite a bit.

Great idea. I put our thunder shirt on teddy. We forgot we had one.

back when I had a dog, he didnt do well during fireworks - mostly because he would attack them and obviously that’s bad. for about 10 yearrs, from July 2nd - 5th we would go camping… not always to a campground, sometimes out in the wilderness - but basically somewhere that had no explosions. one year we even did the hotel thing just to switch it up.

it’s been a few years since he passed, july 4th is probably my least favorite holiday now.

I hate fireworks. It not only distrubs dogs and cats, but PTSD war vets can get spooked. Not only that, but wild animals abandon their babies because they get spooked, then the babies die. It sucks. I have no advice for your pooch. Maybe just try to be with him and comfort him so he knows it’s going to be okay.

All about dogs - dog breeds, dog training and behavior, news affecting dog owners or handlers, puppy pics, etc.

Rules (Will be refined later on).

  1. Don’t be a dick. This should cover most things, just keep in mind that everyone started somewhere and try to be helpful rather than rude or judgmental.

  2. No personal attacks based on training style or tools.
Discussion of balanced training including proper use of aversives is allowed here.

  3. All breeds and mixes are welcome. You can criticize backyard breeding practices but don’t pile on people because they own a specific breed or prefer purebreds or mixed breeds.

  4. Do not support backyard breeders or puppy mills. Please do not link to or suggest buying from high volume breeders or those with an obvious lack of standards and testing.

  5. Do not help or support fake service animals. Please do not encourage people to buy fake service dog vest or ESA letters to get around rental or other restrictions & do not give advice on how to misrepresent a dog as a service or support animal.
